The machine should fit the site before it fits the hole. A zero-tail-swing mini excavator that can
get through a gate beats a full-size machine that cannot reach the dig, and a full-size machine on
an open acreage can move a basement’s worth of soil far sooner. Here is what each class does and
where we use it.
Small tracked excavators, the zero-tail-swing ones with an upper house that turns inside the width of the tracks, so the counterweight never swings past the machine into a fence, a neighbouring wall or a laneway.
Used for: Backyards reached through a gate, trenching beside a house, digging along existing foundations, and interior or tight-access work where a full-size machine cannot fit or would do damage getting there.
The middle class, with weight classes that vary by manufacturer: enough reach and breakout force to dig a full basement or a deep service trench, with a short tail that keeps the machine working on a narrow city lot.
Used for: Infill basements between existing houses, water and sewer service trenches from the street, retaining wall bases and foundation backfill where space is limited.
Large tracked excavators with the reach, bucket size and stability to move volume quickly and dig deep, open excavations safely back from the edge.
Used for: Basements on open lots and acreages, mass cut-and-fill, dugouts and retention basins, commercial pads, and demolition where the machine can stand clear of the structure.
Nimble loaders on rubber tracks or wheels that carry buckets, grapples, augers and grading attachments, and move material around a site without rutting it the way wheels on wet clay do.
Used for: Spreading and levelling gravel, fine grading topsoil, clearing brush with a grapple, loading trucks on small sites, and backfilling in lifts.
Crawler dozers push and spread material across large areas. Paired with a rotating laser or satellite-positioning machine control, the blade holds a designed elevation and slope instead of relying on eye and stakes alone.
Used for: Rough and fine grading of lots and pads, cut-and-fill balancing, shaping acreage driveways and ditches, and spreading granular base to a consistent thickness.
Hydraulic hammers, ripper teeth, grapples, thumbs, tilting ditch buckets and compaction wheels that turn one excavator into several tools.
Used for: Breaking concrete slabs, footings and asphalt, ripping frozen ground or hard till, sorting demolition debris, cutting ditch and swale slopes, and compacting trench backfill.
Vibratory plate compactors and rammers for trenches and tight spots; smooth-drum rollers for granular base; padfoot rollers for clay subgrade.
Used for: Compacting backfill in lifts, preparing subgrade and gravel base under driveways, slabs and pads, and proof rolling to find soft spots before paving or pouring.
Pressurized water loosens the soil and a high-powered vacuum lifts the slurry into a tank, so buried lines are exposed without a steel bucket anywhere near them.
Used for: Daylighting located gas, power and communication lines before machine digging, test holes, pole and post holes near utilities, and digging where hand exposure would be slow.
Gate widths, laneways, overhead power lines, trees to keep and what the machine has to drive over all come before the size of the hole.
Depth and reach
A deep basement or sewer trench needs reach to dig and to keep spoil back from the edge. A shallow conduit trench needs a narrow bucket and a light touch.
Volume and trucking
How much material comes out, and whether trucks can load beside the dig or need a loader to carry it out, sets the rest of the equipment on a job.
Equipment Questions
Why not just bring the biggest excavator?
Because a machine that cannot reach the dig without crossing a neighbour’s yard, clipping an overhead line or cracking a driveway costs more than it saves. A bigger machine moves more per scoop, but on an infill lot or a backyard the smaller, zero-tail-swing class often finishes sooner because it can work right where the digging is. We choose the class from the access, the depth and the volume, and sometimes use two sizes on the same job.
Will the machines damage my driveway or lawn?
Tracked machines spread their weight, but steel tracks, turning on the spot and loaded trucks can still mark concrete, asphalt and turf. Where a machine has to cross a finished surface, we plan the route, use rubber-tracked equipment or ground protection mats where they help, and tell you beforehand about anything that cannot be fully protected, such as a lawn on the only access route.
Do you work in winter?
Excavation carries on through a Calgary winter, with extra steps. Frozen ground at the surface has to be broken through before normal digging, open excavations and stockpiled backfill need protecting from frost, and frozen backfill should never be compacted back in. Some work, like fine grading and topsoil, is better left for spring. We will tell you which applies to your job.
